The fanservice during the photo shoot were at least something to keep the viewer’s interest because the characters themselves certainly weren’t going to do that. The animation is good enough although it’s nothing special. I’d like to cover some positive aspects of the Super Sonico anime but there really isn’t much there.

Yet another puzzling choice in a show full of them. Regardless, her voice sounds as lifeless as the show she inhabits. Her voice sounded almost mechanical although according to Crunchyroll she does have a voice actress. It doesn’t help that her voice sounds awful. She’s a generic clumsy/helpless girl personality that offers nothing out of the ordinary and is better suited to a side-character than the character that is ostensibly supposed to carry your show. Sonico herself has no distinguishing characteristics other than those two blobs of fat on her chest. There were no laughs, unless you count Sonico’s manager showing up in a fire-breathing mask and that was more amusing in a “what the hell were they thinking?” sense than in a true slice of life comedy sense. Maybe it’s the comedy or the character quirks of the main cast or the heartwarming stories told but SoniAni has none of these. Even the blandest of slice of life anime have some kind of hook for the viewer. I’m generally a fan of slice of life anime but there really seems to be no reason for a Super Sonico anime to be made. If you’re watching this it’s likely that you simply wanted more SYD and that seems to be almost exactly what you’re getting so hooray for that.Īfter the first episode of SoniAni I’m forced to wonder why this show even exists. Ultimately the first episode of SYD * was about the same as what we got from the first season save for the significant animation upgrade.

The jokes themselves felt kind of stale and it didn’t help that the background music was stopping and starting in time with the jokes leaving no illusions on the part of the viewer that we were simply having a series of one-off jokes lobbed in our direction with no rhyme or reason. If the solution to this problem is the step up the self-awareness by adding joke timers and upgrading the Suzu’s head indicator I’m not that impressed but at least it’s something. I had wondered going in how well the plot of SYD could carry a second season since the humor seemed to have a one-track mind that mirrors the one-track mind of a typical high school student. The other thing that struck me about the first episode was how often the show was breaking the fourth wall. I guess GoHands has to put their money somewhere and there are worse places to dump your budget than a sequel to a fairly popular manga adaptation but it still seemed odd. The jokes would be just as good with a much smaller animation budget. It isn’t like SYD benefits significantly from the high quality animation. I was constantly wondering what inspired GoHands to sink what was obviously a non-trivial animation budget into a 4koma adaptation about lewd jokes. I found the crisp animation and the bizarre camera angles kind of out of place in SYD to be honest. Well that problem has been remedied with SYD * which carries on the GoHands tradition but this time in a distinctive pink hue rather than the blue of K or the green of Coppelion. It doesn’t help that season one didn’t have that heavily filtered look that characterized both K and Coppelion. Would you get a load of that animation? I was surprised when I original saw that the first season of SYD was animated by GoHands since I was completely unaware that the studio did anything before K.
